MUDs - communities or games?

I'll start this post by confessing that I'm VERY new to MUDding...

But I'd like to pose the question: do you feel MUDs are better defined as being communities or games?

I'm still thinking through my own opinion on this, but in case this is something that might be mulling over in other minds, I stumbled across this site which also explores this..

Thoughts anyone????

don't mean to sound dense, but what is MMORPG? (if that's in a reading, I haven't come across it yet)?

Thanks

Yeah, people use these things in different ways. Counterstrike, for example (the most played multiplayer online shooter in the world) has, obviously, a huge following. Yet people engage at different levels. Some, like myself, logon once every month or so for a few games. I rarely interact with the other players verbally, except perhaps to ask a quick question about the map we are playing or something. Other people have clans, in which hopeful punters try out to become a clan member, and if successful they wear that clan's prefix before their name(ie O.C.H.R.E. Bodhiflip). These clans interact via msn messenger or similiar prog, they meet inside locked game servers for clan practice, they 'war' other clans, and they may meet personally for practice or tactic sessions. Certainly, these are serious 'game' players, but there is as much 'community' there as in anything, I think. It's just that the community is focused to the point of obsession on a video game. I've discussed some possibilities about where this might lead in my comment to Stewart's post 'Possessing Barbie' if anyone is interested in talking about that.
