Net Studies 214/514: Virtual Communities

Hi,
I liked the fact that you chose an unorthodox medium of 'play' to utilise for this study. I've seen the site before and though it had some really great (and really strange!) stuff on it. You mentioned that you entered with caution for fear of stepping over the boundary of etiquette for the community. This is something I keep experiencing and puzzles yet intrigues me. Why is it we enter a virtual space with as much 'reverance' for the conventions of its inhabitants as we would a recognised physical institution (eg. being quiet in a library). This fact in itself for me represents a tangible link between online and offline community... Anyway, just thinking aloud... :) Nice job
Hey Sammyjo, this is a late post and you might not get it cause we're all so busy with assignments (halfway though my net essay now!) but thnx for the comment. Its true: we do enter with reverence for the conventions of an virtual space, such as being quiet in the library....good point. I spose we seek human acceptance from our invisible online peers because we recognise that these are real human connections, albeit unseen and lacking some normal human communication conventions such as facial expressions etc.
