I found it very interesting that many of the participants in the MUFC newsgroup barracked for other teams - like you I would have assumed it mainly to be true MUFC fans that resided there.
I have to say I agree with your conclusion - the more I explore communities online the harder it becomes to find a universal criteria for 'what is a community' and therefore the harder it is to get a handle on it all. Nice job
i also agree with your conclusion about this newsgroup - as you would know there are many online forums for football fans - i have found that the newsgroups develop far less of a community feel than website based forums...
i'm part of a chelsea group on cfc-net, and it's a place where people can set up meetings to watch games and of course discuss football online and we all 'know' many of the posters...
perhaps a conclusion that that could be drawn is that newsgroups are too broad and easily accessed to develop a close-knit community... particularly as it seems that people get into arguments and slanging matches - on many site-based forums i've been to, the 'locals' welcome opposition fans as long as they're not there simply to be trolls but indulge in football discussions...
